Payments to Armenia for Legal Entities: Banks, Currency, Risks in 2026

Why Armenia has become one of the key transit directions for payments by Russian business, and how to build a payment without delays and unnecessary requests from the bank.

Payments to Armenia Banking compliance Transit payments

Armenia is one of the few neighboring markets for Russia where the banking system has become a connecting link between Russian business and international payments in recent years. Armenian banks process both direct payments to local counterparties and part of the transit operations with third countries. But this role has a downside: the more actively the bank works with cross-border flows, the more carefully it checks each individual operation. Let’s find out what the working payment scheme to Armenia looks like in 2026 and what risks should be considered in advance.

🇦🇲 Why Armenia is not just “another neighboring country”

From the perspective of geography and cultural ties, Armenia is similar to other CIS countries with which Russian business has long-standing trade relations — textiles, food products, construction materials, equipment. But from the perspective of banking infrastructure, the situation is special: Armenian banks are historically deeply integrated into the international correspondent network, including links with European and American financial institutions.

This integration explains why Armenia is often considered a convenient point for international payments — an Armenian bank can carry out the payment further, where a direct transfer from a Russian bank cannot go. But the same integration means that Armenian banks are required to comply with secondary compliance requirements: if the payment looks suspicious from the perspective of the bank’s Western partners, the operation will be stopped or additional documents will be requested — regardless of how legitimate the transaction is in substance.

Important: Over the past two years, Armenian banks have significantly tightened the verification of operations related to Russian companies. This does not mean that payments are impossible — it means that preparing documents and formulating the economic purpose of the operation must be approached more carefully than before.

💱 In which currency to conduct payments

💵
USD The most common currency for payments to Armenia, especially when working with large and medium-sized contracts.
💶
EUR Used less often than USD, but remains a working option — especially if the counterparty is linked to European partners.
🇦🇲
AMD (dram) Used for local operations within Armenia, but requires separate justification for cross-border payments.

🏦 How banking routes are organized

In practice, payments to Armenia are built according to one of several models:

  • Direct payment to a local counterparty — used when the Armenian recipient has an account in a bank with working correspondent relations with the Russian sender’s bank.
  • Payments through a bank intermediary — when the direct route is blocked or the correspondent bank requires additional verification.
  • Agent model — used for more complex transactions, where it is necessary to describe the contractual logic between several parties and confirm the economic purpose of each link in the chain.

Do not expect that the scheme that worked for one recipient bank will automatically work for another: the Armenian banking system is heterogeneous, and different banks apply different levels of verification depending on their own compliance policy and correspondent relations.

⚠️ Main risks to consider

Working with Armenia requires a more careful approach to risks than payments to some other directions:

  1. Enhanced verification from the correspondent bank. If the Armenian bank has correspondent relations with Western institutions, operations related to Russia undergo additional verification — this increases the term and requires a more complete set of documents.
  2. Risk of blocking transit operations. If the payment looks like a transit without a clear business purpose specifically in Armenia, the bank may suspend the operation until explanations are received.
  3. Variability of bank requirements. Compliance policy at different Armenian banks may change, and the route that worked six months ago is not guaranteed to be working now.
  4. Limitations on amounts. For large operations, some banks require a more detailed economic justification than for small regular payments.
Please note: if the task is to use Armenia as a transit point for payments to a third country, such an operation needs to be prepared particularly carefully: banks more often request documents specifically for chain payments, where the final recipient is not in Armenia.

📄 Documents that the bank will require

DocumentWhy it is needed
Contract / InvoiceRecords the subject and terms of the transaction
Counterparty DataDetails of the Armenian company and its bank
Product or Service DescriptionThe more detailed, the fewer questions from the bank’s compliance
Payment BasisReference to a specific point of the contract
Economic Purpose of the OperationSeparately important for transit and agent schemes
Documents on the payment chainFor multi-sided payments — description of the logic between all participants

The more complex the structure of the transaction — especially if several countries or intermediaries are involved — the more important it is to prepare a clear and consistent explanation for the bank in advance. It is at this stage that time is most often lost if the document package is assembled only after the payment is stuck.

🤝 How it is organized in ONLY

ONLY supports international payments of legal entities and individual entrepreneurs to Armenia — both direct payments to local counterparties and more complex multi-sided schemes. We evaluate in advance what level of verification is likely from a specific bank, and prepare documents considering this — to reduce the risk of a request or return of the payment. If the operation does not have a clear business purpose or a sufficient set of documents, we directly state this before the start of work — this is in the interests of both the client and the bank.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Armenian banks becoming more attentive to payments from Russia?
Armenian banks, having correspondent relationships with Western financial institutions, are forced to consider secondary compliance requirements. Because of this, the number of document requests and the time for verifying operations related to Russia has increased.
In which currency is it better to pay the counterpart in Armenia?
USD or EUR are most commonly used, less frequently — Armenian dram for local operations. The choice of currency depends on the recipient bank and whether the counterparty plans further conversion of funds.
Can Armenia be used as a transit country for payments to third countries?
In practice, such schemes are used, but they require even more careful preparation of documents and justification of the economic purpose, as transit operations more often attract the attention of compliance.
What documents are needed to pay an Armenian counterparty?
At a minimum — contract or invoice, counterparty data, description of goods or services, payment basis, and explanation of the economic purpose of the operation. The package is wider for transit or agent schemes.
