International Payments for Business in Russia
1. Prepare the payment basis
Any international operation must have documentary confirmation. Depending on the transaction type, these may be:
- foreign trade contract;
- service agreement;
- invoice;
- specification;
- additional agreement.
Documents must contain identical party details, amount, currency, and transaction subject.
2. Comply with currency control requirements
The bank checks whether the operation complies with currency legislation. If necessary, the contract is registered and receives a unique number (UNK). If the operation is subject to currency control, all documents must be executed without contradictions.
3. Pass bank compliance
Before conducting the payment, the bank analyzes:
- foreign counterparty;
- registration country;
- beneficiary bank;
- economic purpose of the operation;
- correspondence of the company’s activities to the transaction subject.
If risk factors are present, additional documents or explanations may be requested.
4. Check payment documents
Before sending the payment, it is necessary to ensure that:
- amount corresponds to the invoice;
- currency matches the contract;
- recipient details are specified without errors;
- payment purpose contains reference to the contract and invoice.
Even small discrepancies can increase verification time.
5. Prepare explanations in advance
If the transaction differs from the company’s usual activities, is related to a new supplier, or involves a large amount, it is advisable to prepare a brief economic purpose operation description in advance. This will allow quicker responses to possible bank requests.
What to check before conducting international settlement
- The contract is correctly executed.
- The invoice corresponds to the contract.
- Currency and amount match.
- The counterparty has been verified.
- The payment purpose is filled out in detail.
- Documents for currency control have been prepared.
The more transparent the transaction structure and the better the documents are prepared, the higher the probability of successful international settlement without additional requests and delays.
